OUGD505 - Study Task 02 - Appropriation and Subversion
Today's session focused on appropriation and subversion, and how various pieces of imagery can be used to give something a new meaning.
For my outcome, I focused on the struggle of relations that are ongoing between America and Russia - particularly due to the two nations sparring over Syria's use of chemical weapons against its own citizens and over Russia’s interference in the American election.
By looking through a few newspapers, I was able to find some Russian and American imagery. 'Trump x Russia?' was created by cutting out various letters. This was aimed to intrigue people and make them think about whether the two countries will reform their relationship at all. Trump's face was cut out and stuck onto a picture of poor Russian man alongside the caption 'billionaires amass yet more wealth' in a sarcastic attempt to highlight how Trump has managed to further increase his power through winning the election. A lot of messages are being portrayed in the piece made below.
