OUGD603 - Brief 07 - Loneliness - Outcomes & Evaluation

To receive feedback on the outcomes produced the posters and send-outs have been presented to a crit of students and small group of elderly family. Almost all of those who have given feedback believe that the content and design is very appropriate for both a young and elderly audience. Some young people have said that the designs could be more colourful, highlighting that this is something that is more eye-catching and engaging to them; however, I have explained that, as the campaign is focusing on accessibility, the colour can't be too intense as this can have negative effects on some people with disabilities. They agreed with this and said that the scheme concept has a lot of potential, and that it could be a successful solution to combating elderly loneliness. This is really encouraging to hear and it has inspired me to get in touch with a few charities, including Age UK, who I'm waiting to hear back from.

It is difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of the outcomes produced because it would have to be tried and tested to see whether people are interested in getting involved. Furthermore, it is difficult to get feedback as, much of the time, you can't tell if someone is lonely.

Whilst the feedback received was from people who aren't lonely, or so I believe, it has been highlighted that people think the outcomes are well informed and are appropriate in terms of the target audience. I think that the scheme would be a fantastic way to encourage people to receive help and become involved with their community. I hope to hear back from some charities as it would be great to work with a small community to see whether the scheme could bring positive change.

Focusing a brief on a social matter such as loneliness was very inspiring and has made me think a lot about what I could do for others and the community. It has opened my eyes to how important design is and how it can potentially change people's lives, even in the simplest ways. I would like to work more in social design after University and am going to research into agencies/studios who specialise in this.

Due to the change in audience and concept the initial time plan had to be adapted. Despite this, I kept within the 2 week timescale and produced all the word that I wanted to. If I could have done anything differently I would have liked to consider producing a digital campaign, as this is very popular with young people and could promote the scheme more effectively to that audience. Overall, this was one of the most eye-opening and enjoyable projects of this module.
