In Level 04 I entered the Secret 7 competition, but was unsuccessful in making it into the exhibition. I physically constructed and produced sleeves, which was challenging, time consuming and resulted in the outcomes fairly lacking in quality. A few people in the year managed to get through to the exhibition; however, all their designs were submitted digitally, rather than physically. For this reason, I have chosen to enter the competition once again, this time, only submitting digital designs.
Music is a huge passion of mine - as a producer I have been making my own artwork for a few years now. Recently, I've really got into collecting vinyl records, which is the main reason why this brief appeals to me so much. My interpretation of the brief is to design a sleeve that links to the song chosen in some way. The guidelines given highlight that designs must not include the artist's name or song title, must be CMYK, must have a 3mm bleed and be less than 10mb.
Looking at the song choices, I have chosen to pick a track that I think will be less popular with my age group, to try and stand out from the mass number of student entries. After talking to a vast amount of students who are entering Secret 7, it has become clear that many people are thinking of making designs for the Jimi Hendrix track or the London Grammar track. I put the remaining 5 track choices into a hat and picked one at random. The track chosen is 'The Clash - I'm Not Down'. This is the focus of designs for the remainder of this brief.
Originally, I was going to set myself one week to complete this brief; but, because the Creative Conscience brief took a week longer than expected, I have given myself three days to complete this brief. As designs are going to be entirely digital, the process doesn't need to be any longer than this.
