By using the research made, I have sketched out a variety of initial ideas. These have been presented to a variety of people, alongside the audio track and lyrics, to see which ideas people think suit the song best. The 5 main ideas presented are as follows:
Idea 1 - One of the lyrics in the song is 'On my own I faced a gang of jeering, In strange streets, When my nerves were pumping and I fought my fear in, I didn't run, I was not done'. Inspired by Mick Jones' positivity to overcome those around him, and also depression - the song's focus, this concept is to show a happy, brave face overcoming surrounding of negativity. People think that this concept strongly linked to the song's meaning; yet, the central face drawn needs to be brought out in comparison to the surrounding faces. This will inform he developments in the following stage.
Idea 2 - This concept is the most simplistic, and is based completely off the band's name - The Clash. The idea is to essentially produce sleeves that have clashing colours, shapes or sides. This would be more effective if showed digitally; however, people think that the concept is less strong than the others as it doesn't relate to the song's meaning and background. For this reason, I am not going to develop this idea forward.
Idea 3 - 'The Black Dog' is a well-known saying that Winston Churchill made in reference to depression. As the song is all about defiance and beating depression, this seems like an appropriate reference to use. The concept is to show a bold, almost defiant-looking dog as the focus of the sleeve. People think that this was a very strong concept; but, it has been suggested that the dog could be photographic and highly contrasting in relation to the image style of punk artwork. This will inform the design decisions made in the next stage.
Idea 4 - Inspired by the track title 'I'm Not Down', I have sketched out upwards arrows, to symbolise positivity and development. When placed side to side, I realised that upside down arrows were formed in the white space. This creates a visual that shows both upwards and downwards arrows, relating to the song in the sense of how Mick Jones had ups and downs went dealing with depression. Feedback suggests introducing colour, but keeping the simplicity of the shapes as the focus of the piece. This idea will therefore be taken forward to the following stage.
Idea 5 - The fifth idea is simply inspired by the lyric 'I know there'll be some way, When I can swing everything back my way, Like skyscrapers rising up'. The concept is to have a skyscraper standing tall above the clouds, as a symbol of solidity and strength. People think that the concept behind this is similar to that of the 1st idea, and voted that I should not develop it forward.
